The Graduate Program in Visual Culture (Master’s), authorized by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES (Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) in 2003, had the doctorate program approved in 2010, and became the Graduate Program in Arts and Visual Culture – Master’s and Doctorate (PPGACV).

Pioneer in the institutionalization of visual culture studies in Brazil, the Graduate Program in Arts and Visual Culture covers investigations involving the major area of Arts, Culture and Visuality, regarding three lines of research: image, culture, and production of meaning; visual poetics and creation processes; and image culture and mediation processes.

A significant part of the graduated students now works in the fields of basic and higher education, cultural heritage management, as well as other academic activities. The Program regularly receives visiting researchers from different parts of Brazil and from foreign high education and research institutions.

The Graduate Program in Arts and Visual Culture organizes every two years the National Seminar of Research in Arts and Visual Culture. The conference took place annually from 2008 to 2015.

The Program publishes the Visualidades Journal twice a year. The Journal was rated as A2 at WebQualis/Capes.

At the last triennial evaluations by CAPES (2007-2010 and 2010-2013) the program achieved the concept 4. In 2014, the first doctoral defenses of the Program took place.
